The chosen theme for my third conceptual project at Nottingham Trent revolves around BLM (Black Lives Matter) and the artworks created by Black artists, celebrating Black identity and challenging stereotypes. I intend to incorporate both aspects into performative costumes, aiming to deliver a message that resonates with all audiences.

The objective is to enable viewers to appreciate the art while conveying a powerful statement about the significance of Black identity in contemporary society.

Costume Design: Exploring Emotions and Heritage

My costume designs merge influences from Anderson's vivid paintings, Marshall's cultural motifs, and Ofili's inventive figuration. Reflecting Jamaican heritage and diverse art influences, they blend dynamic colors, patterns, and textures. Marshall's motifs add depth, while Ofili's figuration inspires reinterpretation. Meticulously detailed, they celebrate artistic expression and cultural heritage.

For anger, I designed a costume resembling an explosion, mirroring the internal turmoil it evokes. The costume depicting being ignored features a masked figure with transparent wings, symbolising invisibility and isolation. Another rendition, colourless to blend with the background, underscores the theme of not being seen. The pride costume embodies courage, justice, and strength with a lion's mane and gold armour, emphasising these characteristics.
